Math is a universal language, that is understandable across borders. Math helps you to become more logical, empathetic and able to solve problems. As a math major you have to be organized to analyze problems, whether it is organizing time to meet deadlines or to have all your work presented accurately to be able to analyze and interpret data.
Some skills that I have developed as a math major is the ability to present mathematical arguments and the conclusions with accuracy and clarity. The ability to learn independently or as part of a group using a variety of resources. Time management and organizational abilities that I have developed would be crucial as an individual working in finance. I am adaptable, in particular displaying readiness to address new problems from new areas and transfer knowledge to assess problems logically and approach them analytically. My background in mathematics has enhance my ability to explain complex ideas coherently so that they are easy to understand. These skills will be advantageous in any future job that I will encounter making me stand out.
Being in the field of finance would help me with my management skills, saving and capability to pay attention to details. It would help me better my arithmetic skills and achieve the ability to think more logically. I was able to take the required math courses to better my knowledge for a career in finance. An example would be the calculus courses that I have taken. After taking that class I am able to apply calculus to finance. Another course that I have taken was intro to management science, the course was very helpful to give a real life perspective of companies through case studies. Robert J. Shiller once said, “Finance is not merely about making money. It's about achieving our deep goals and protecting the fruits of our labor. It's about stewardship and, therefore, about achieving the good society.” I am able to use cognitive thinking skills that will help me in the finance field.
My math teachers have motivated and encouraged me to become more adaptive. Being a math major has taught me how to problem solve, think critically, and consider all possible variables in a situation. Graduating with a degree in mathematics would give me the opportunity to choose from various career paths and gives you an ability to experience many different things. Mathematics is always expanding and can be applied to modern day problems.
